I backed up my serendipity folder, then copied the files from the new folder, overwriting everything in the old folder. Loaded the blog page, and got a friendly message saying that I appeared to be trying to upgrade from 0.8 to 1.5.2, and clicked a link to approve the upgrade.
After a while, I got a page saying,
"Hi, and welcome to the Serendipity upgrade agent.
"I am here to help you upgrade your Serendipity 0.8 installation.
"You are seeing this message because you have just installed Serendipity 1.5.2, but have not yet upgraded your database installation to fit this version.
"First we will take a look at your current setup and attempt to diagnose any compatibility problems.
"Errors are displayed in red, recommendations in yellow and success in green."
...and then, nothing else happens.
Could permissions be wrong on something, which is causing the upgrader to stall out?
Upgrade 0.8-1.5.2 -- script stalled?
Re: Upgrade 0.8-1.5.2 -- script stalled?
upped PHP's memory restrictions from 8M per script to 32M and it worked. I'll leave this here in case it helps anyone else.

Thanks for posting the solution - too many people will just post, "figured it out" without explaining how.
LOTS of differences in that upgrade of yours, so be sure to poke around.
