Blog Carnival *Webmaster Articles* - Serendipity is Welcome!

Post by johncanary »

Hi,

I will be hosting the next edition of the "Webmaster Articles" Blog Carnival
on my Blog on December 03, 2007. It's a Serendipity powered Blog of course.

I would love to get article submissions from other Serendipity Blogs as well.
Let's show the WorldPress World of Internet Marketing, that they are not alone. S9Y
has noting to hide.

You sumbit a recent post (Oct. or Nov. 2007) that's on topic and you are done. What
you get is some exposure, some readers, some traffic. A submission can be done in
two minutes. Your entire Blog should be in English language please and related to the
theme. Here is the Carnival Description:
  • Description: Writings of interest to webmasters and bloggers.
Keywords: webmaster, blogger, blog, article, post, design
    Filed under: technology
    Submission deadline: 30. November
    Submission categories: Design, Traffic-Building, Monetization
Just look at the previous and current editions and you quickly see what it is all about.
I am looking forward to promote your quality article on December 03, 2007 on my
'Serendipity Powered E-Biz Booster Blog'.

Good on you for sharing John, my article is submitted. It mentions Serendipity, but the article is of use to any blogger.

BTW, how many articles can we submit?

Sharing is a good basis for success :D
Thanks for your article. Your Blog is really "fine". I am happy about original content.
I only wanted to remind "everybody" that you will get more attention, if you
write about something with a broader appeal.

Feel free to submit more articles to this one, if you like.

The edition itself will be a selection of the best posts that give an interesting mix. No
one has a guarantee to be included. Sometimes two articles from the same author or
blog get featured. It all depends on the mix, and of course the carnival shouldn't
become a link list. Too long is not good.

Carl, I can tell you that at least one of your articles will be in. I cannot promise
more at this point.

Yours
John

P.S. Most successful Internet marketers, coaches, ..., submit their best posts to
almost any carnival in their niche on a regular basis.

P.P.S.: I really like S9Y and I think the more S9Y bloggers are active and visible in
the world wide community, the better for everyone. The better the chances
we get more plugins, .... etc.

Sadly very few of us are actively promoting s9y outside of the Serendipity world. I'm really excited about our contest being hosted on an s9y blog.

We cannot really blame them. Even though Serendipity is offered by the world largest registrar -- GoDaddy -- it is too tempting for everyone to jump on the WordPress "train". Especially for newcomers and not tech savvy people. Of course S9Y can be handled with very limited tech knowledge, because of Spartacus and the Media Management. You don't even need to know about FTP (if your host provides S9Y) when getting started.

BUT, it gives people so much confidence with Wordpress, that there are so many people using it, and so many resources are out there. Almost everybody recommends WP. Most of the people, who recommend WP admit, that they never have even tried another platform.

The "Want to make money quick", "Blogging", ..., ..., ..., ..., ... segments are dominated by Wordpress. Look at Google for example.

Code: Select all

1,780,000 results for Blog Software Serendipity
493,000 results for Blog Software S9Y
  1,380,000 results for Tutorial Serendipity
    212,000 results for Tutorial S9Y
  1,550,000 results for Plugins Serendipity
    460,000 results for Plugins S9Y
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
  5,875,000 Total for Serendipity

59,500,000 results for Blog Software WordPress
4,450,000 results for Blog Software WP
 10,200,000 results for Tutorial Wordpress
  2,200,000 results for Tutorial WP
 15,300,000 results for Plugins Wordpress
  2,170,000 results for Plugins WP
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
 93,820,000 TOTAL for WordPress

WP:S9Y ~= 16:1
Is it, that the typical S9Y-User is more tech-affine and does not care so much about those Internet Marketing, and Social Bookmarking Platforms? Do they simply want their Blog, write their content and don't promote so much? You must have a better overview from your s9y-user.com Project.

You cannot win a battle against Microsoft, and you cannot win a battle against WordPress. It's very comparable.
I just looked at my combined Webstats for all site for October.

Code: Select all

  90% Windows Users
   5% Linux -"-
   4% Mac -"-
If you look at the WordPress : S9Y ratio. It comes close.

I believe Serendipity has a better foundation, technically speaking. That's why I am using it and I try to be somewhat active in this community. I wish S9Y will be around for at least another 100 years

Other than that I think and operate platform independently.

Yours
JohnCanary

P.S.: I guess I should upgrade to the latest S9Y version before Dec 03. One week before or so in order to be able to actively support PINGBACKS.

John,

Much of what you say is correct, and my observations are as follows;

We have far too much emphasis on Spartacus and the wiki. A user very rarely needs to go anywhere else to find information on using Serendipity. As a consequence, template designers and plugin coders have no incentive to write about s9y on their blogs. I've mentioned this on my own blog, and in private with other users.

We need to break up the dominance of the 5-6 major s9y sites in the search engines. I own two of them, Jannis (the project) has s9y.org, then there is Dave, Abdussamad and Bulletproof.

Outside of this group a search will often turn up defunct pages, results for the Serendipity movie, templates for the other Serendipity (I believe it's a scrapbooking or quilting software package) and precious little else. However, the way to break up the dominance of the top half dozen sites is not to remove them from the SEs, but instead to promote other s9y users.

I would happily give away free SEO advice, even perform SEO on other users sites for free if they would just put their hands up but in this project we are dealing with a level of comfort that comes from lack of incentive.

The WP world is very good at providing incentives. There are regular template contests, plugin developers are able to sell their plugins, web developers actively sell their premium templates or seek out sponsorship, yet the Serendipity world does none of this.

I believe, and I may be wrong, but I believe this, the Serendipity world can easily become the next mac of the blogging world. Apart from WP, there is also Blogger, Typepad, Nucleus, and a raft of others. Serendipity could quickly become the blog of choice for anyone who chooses not to use WP or Blogger, and we could probably take a fair share of the market for Blogspot users who want to upgrade. What we need to do is rapidly build up the range of templates, dramatically increase the number of entries in user blogs relating to Serendipity, and find some easy way of facilitating plugin development.

If a few of us got together (virtually) and churned out a few dozen articles to be posted on major directories, article submission sites, and on user blogs, and if we mentioned some of the A-List bloggers by name in our entries as possibly benefiting from trying out Serendipity, then I think we could build some excitement around the project.

OK, those are just my few cents, I woner if anyone else wants to share.

Hi

Whilst I'd be happy to contribute to future 'Carnivals', as Carl says my site, s9y-bulletproof and Carl's own site are all found well when searching for Serendipity. We need a broader base of contributing bloggers to spread the word. Perhaps more importantly, we also need the word spreading outside of the blogging world if Serendipity is to become the Apple mac to Wordpress' Microsoft windows.

cheers
Dave
