English admin interface but Polish reader interface?

Is it possible? My blog is in Polish, so I'd like to have all those "Categories", "Tags", ... to be translated in Polish, while my blog is being read by somebody (and I'd like to have it sticky, whatever are browser settings)

But, at the same time, I find it difficult to find plugins by name, identify their options, etc when they are translated to Polish. So I'd prefer admin interface in English.

Is it possible?

Hi!

The global blog language is controlled via the "Blog language" option in the s9y configuration.

While you are logged in, your personal language setting will take precende on how the interface is shown to you. If you set it to english, you will see both frontend and backend in english.

Hm, in that case, you would need to use a different browser for the frontend, or logout from the backend if you want to go to the frontned...

I would like to use English as the backend, and another language for the frontend too.

I am not quite understand about the multilingual plugin initially, i was thinking it only let users have a choice on the language of the entries.
After taking a look at yellowled's blog, i realised it makes the changes to the interface language of the blog too.

Anyway, i just installed the multilingual plugin at my blog to let the readers to have a choice of the language, mainly for the interface language purpose as i don't think i would blog in two languages.

Now my question is, is there a way to set the front end default language without changing my backend default language?
E.g. my blog is installed in English, i wrote the blog post in Chinese instead (not by "editing in other language" option). When someone browse my blog, he would see the interface in English except the blog posts are in Chinese. He then needs to change the interface language to Chinese using the drop down box.
I would prefer to have the Chinese showing as default for frontend then.

May i know if that is possible?

Hi Rei!

You can change the default blog language inside the global s9y configuration. This will only take precedence, if you also disable the option "Autodetect user's browser language". And as long as you're logged in, your personal preference of the backend language will also take precedence, so you might need to get logged out until you see, how your visitors see the frontend.

I already disabled the Configuration > General Settings > Use Visitor's browser language as default before started the installation.

I am a bit confuse,
a) Personal Settings > Your Personal Details > Language > English
b) Configuration > General Settings > Language > English
* Both are in English since i installed S9Y in English language initially.

I thought Personal Settings is the language that i want to see for the whole blog, including frontend and backend; and the General Settings is the language for other visitors who is not logged in.
Is the settings suppose to work that way?

I uninstalled the multilingual plugin, tried to change the language under General Settings. I then clicked "Check & Save", although a prompt saying that "Configuration written & saved", but the English language is still the default language.

I don't know why it won't save the language i want. Any ideas?

This actually the same as what i did before installing the multilingual plugin. Just because changing the language won't work, i thought those settings are not suppose to work the way that i think they should.

Edit to add:
I could change the language setting under Personal Settings though, it saved the changes, but still no change on the language for either frontend or backend.

I am going to check the file permission settings of my S9Y installation now.

That is exactly how it's supposed to work!

The only way I can currently imagine is responsible for your problems, could be cookies that the multilingual plugins sets when you switch a language through the dropdown. Can you clear your browser's cookies for your s9y site and see if that helps things?

Maybe if you are somehow familiar with phpmyadmin, you can check the serendipity_config table and see what values you have when you search for the config name "lang". You should see one for authorid0 (global language) and one for your authorid (personal language).

Yes, i am familiar with phpMyAdmin but i first tried deleting all the cookies for the site, as advised by you. It works well now. Thank you very much!

Not sure if others would overlook this pretty useful setting. I think the description can be a little bit more clear? e.g. for the Configuration > Language > "Select the frontend interface language for your blog" .

It's just a suggestion.
