Bulletproof as new serendipity default template?

Hi Guys!

Every once in a while, I have a wish too.

I'm madly in love with bulletproof and its rich feature set. I'd really love if bulletproof can become the new serendipity template in Serendipity 1.3.

However for that, I'd love to get a colorset that emulates the look of the current Serendipity default template (carl_contest). This would make the barrier of migrating s9y users lower, and they could still feel the power of bulletproof. Since the default template was only elected for serendipity 1.0, I'd not like to change the look of it to the bulletproof violet default, simply because carl_contest is some kind of "corporate design" for Serendipity.

What do you think about that? Can it be done? And would you like that, too?

I don't think I'm allowed to vote on this (I'm biased after all), but I think I can say on behalf of the BP development team that we'd be proud as hell to be the new default.

I'd like to suggest teeny tiny ... not really changes, but ... updates, though. I really don't want to step on anybody's toes, and I also know changing the default template is a sensible thing, but after all, carl_contest is almost 18 months old. A little pimping here and there should be allowed

Seems like YL and I are banging on the keyboard at the same time.

Before we get into a technical discussion, let me also point out that I am not excited about the limitation that it would need to look like the current default. First - I do not think it is fair to Carl. He created that on his own, and I really do not want to pirate his design for BP. The reverse is also true - BP is something completely new. 99.9999999999% of the effort is in the code, not the stylesheets.

I understand that you might want something a bit more conservative as a default, and team bulletproof could certainly collaborate on that, but I would like the 1.0 look-a-like requirement removed.

We can ask Carl about it, but I'm really, really sure we would prefer a BPized design instead of keeping the current one.

I agree with YL,if you see places where "pimping" is possible, I see no reason why it shouldn't be done.

I understand that you might want something a bit more conservative as a default, and team bulletproof could certainly collaborate on that, but I would like the 1.0 look-a-like requirement removed.

Hm, I understand that view, but currently I don't want to change the default look of Serendipity. Users have not quite settled with the "new" default design, and changing it again is a no go within the next 12 months.

Just so no one else feels obiged to do so: I have just now started to port carl_contest to BP. I'm definitely not the right guy to spruce it since I think that would require to redo some of the graphics involved, but the css part shouldn't be a problem at all (no offense to Carl

)

instead of keeping the existing default as it currently stands, or instead of keeping one of the current bp colorsets? I agree that none of the 3 current colorsets would be ideal, and perhaps something more consistent with, but not identical to, carl_contest should be the objective.

And are we talking about the front end only, or are you also wanting a backend styling change?

I found some strange things....

1. FF 1.0.7 does not like the entries preview page (preview_iframe.tpl) in the admin backend. It does not open sized up 100%. Updating FF to 2.0.0.6 solved this problem.

2. Just found this too: BP 1.0 or s9y uses different settings if used with http://www.domain.com or http://domain.com. I had to set the config in my bp based template for both to get around this.

3. The page footer is not very easy to show up centered.

1) I cannot answer why an earlier version of FF had that problem. The oldest FF I personally have is 1.5, and it works fine.

2) What exactly do you mean here??? Navigation and the "currentpage" class?

3) Which portion of the footer is not easy to center?

2] Well, I just dicovered this some hours ago. Its seems to be a problem of s9y, not bp specific! Sorry for that. I never recognized this behaviour before, but when I found a google link without the www I saw it happen. Now I know it shows up with all my templates. It seems to me, that the config settings of the templates depend on the original setting in admin panel with or without the www. If set with www in the url and you return to your blog and view the pages without the www the settings are not true. I can't really explain what you want to know about: Navigation and the "currentpage" class? I proofed it like described above. Maybe its just a problem of my server settings?

3] I remembered having problems setting the footer #serendipity_credit_line to be centered.

Neither. By adding another colorset, setting that one as the default colorset and setting BP as the new initial template in any s9y installation. At least that's what I figured.

(I guess the term "default template" is a little ambiguous as long as we still have /templates/default/.)

Exactly. I'm fine with a colorset that mimics the layout of carl_contest, with some room of design-changes. But it should still be a look-similar.

I'd much appreciate also if the Admin styling could be changed to the default admin style through some template option?

I'm at it. I'll probably shoot Don a copy tomorrow so he can work on the graphics involved. Let's say you should have a preview copy after the weekend

How about this for a 1.3 feature - the ability to select ANY admin style independent of the template's admin style, although it would still be the template's admin style by default unless a user chooses to change it.

In other words, a user then has the choice to choose one template for the front end, and a different template for the backend.

Of course, figuring that out will be up to the code junkies!

That's a good idea! But I'd rather like to take this as a long-term solution, and maybe add a usual theme option for the mid-term?

Adding the independence of the templates is more work than it seems, and I'm not sure how long it will take me. But for a template it would currently only involve a new config item and to check that one in the admin/index.tpl file?

BP admin does not use a custom admin/index.tpl.......
