One Question? Please Help.

Post by Bizmal »

Hi everyone. I'm new to Serendipity and I have a question for you. When I make new entries in different catagories they all show up in the main page anyway. How do I change this so it only shows up in it's catagorie?

I want people to only be able to see the entries in each catagorie. Not all at onece when they go to the blog. Example If I post something in Cat 1. then I post something in cat 2. They all show up on the main page. You can change to cat1 and only view that cat. But I want people to only see each cat seperate and not all together. Does that make since?

I do not know if it makes sense to a blog, but if you want to do so, just do it.

And to the question "how to?":

You said what your visitors should NOT see on the main page (no entry should be present there, entries should be presented in their cat-page only. Right?

But, WHAT should they see on the main page? an empy page? something like "Wellcome on my blog - have a look to the categories!" or what?

I understand what your saying about it being a blog. I don't want a blank page. The problem is if I post news in one cat and then something less important in another cat it sends the news down one on the main page. Because the index page is mixed catagories. Making the less important entry on top. when I post two or three things a day plus other editors and it moves the main news to far down. People pay less attention to it. I would like the news catagorie to show as the index page and not mixed with less important catorgories. If people would like to read the less important stuff they can click on that cat. If thats just how it works, oh well.

OK, understanding it right: There is one (or two) category with important entries. Right?

So, if we are able to get entries of this category on the top, it would be fine to you?

So, we have several ways.

One way - perhaps very smart:

Try the event-plugin "Newsboxes" and select in this the important-category.

So you can have a box with the entries of the important category on the top every time. All other (less important) entries are below.

Try it and tell us if this is fine for you. If not, we will find another way :-)

perhaps it would be a good idea to give a a link to your site?

Bizmal - have you tried to see if the "extended properties for entries" plugin will do what you want? Once installed, every entry will have some additional options, one of which is "Hide from article overview / frontpage". I think this will accomplish exactly what you want, assuming I understand your request.

@Don Chambers: But for this he has to config this manualy for each entry.

And, perhaps there could be side-effects to the rss-feed. I read in another thread, that "not displayin on the main-page" (by extended-properties or by hide-this-category-from-mainpage) causes to non-existing in the normal feed! (or so)

I am not sure what the feed implications are for hiding entries from the frontpage. One easy way to find out though!! :)

And there you have it - feeds only include frontpage entries, so if they are hidden, they are not included in the feed.... unless someone wants to hack the plugin. So, hiding with extended entries solves the frontpage issue, but at the expense of also hiding those entries from feeds. Either that is an acceptable trade-off, or another solution is required. The newsbox plugin sounds like one. Marking entries as "sticky" kinda works, but becomes cumbersome with many entries marked with "sticky" status.
