Google Webmaster Tools Site Verify Problem

Hi - I am trying to verify my site through Google webmaster tools and receive an error every time. I have uploaded the file google3d22ce543fffe9fa.html to my site but google says
"We've detected that your verification file returns a status of 404 (Not found) in the header."

Has anyone else been successful verifying their site with google webmaster tools? If so can you tell me how or what I am going wrong. I would try the meta-tag way, but don't know how.

if u use mod_rewrite for nice url's its better to use a html nugget in the head with the meta-code.
