I want to make these all available to me editors to use to add to their articles. I have uploaded them all to the serendipity uploads directory.
Is there a way I can get all of them into the media library in one move!

I believe that if you have "Enable on-the-fly media synchronization" enabled (under the Configuration/Image Conversion Settings menu) you just need to open the "Media library" page...
Otherwise, I believe you use the "Rebuild Thumbs" option (though it will take a while).
