Hi!

Yes. That's called spam, and it hits about every blog around. You can only try to tweak the settings of your spamblock plugin.

Trackback Bombing

Post by vavai »

Hi Xel :-),

I got same experience last month. MySQL database full with spam [trackback and comments]. I can reduce trackback bombing by activating spam protector with this setting :

1. Reject comments which only contain the entry title - Yes
2. Do not allow duplicate comments - Yes
3. Enable Captchas - Yes
4. Check Trackback URLs
Only allow trackbacks, when its URL contains a link to your blog - Yes

To prevent another spam method, try to moderate another setting and see spam protector results from Serendipity Admin-Comments after a few days so you can recheck your setting.

Best Regards,

Hi easttowest,

You can temporary disable comments or trackback by activating this option at spam protector plugin (located at serendipity event plugin). Don't forget to deactivating this option after finishing spam removal.

To delete 80000 spam trackback (or another big size of spam) , you can execute SQL syntax via phpmyadmin or another MySQL client with this syntax,

Code: Select all

delete from serendipity_comments where type = 'trackback'
Replace "serendipity" with your table prefix and add another selection to avoid deleting normal trackback.

Please make a strict setting to spam protector plugin so you will not take a year to delete this spam :D. You may tried some setting and review for 2-3 days to see the result.

Best Regards,

Hi!

To make trackbacks fail more ressource-savingly, edit your comment.php and insert:

Code: Select all

<?php
if ($_GET['type'] == 'trackback') die('Temporarily Unavailble');
?>
at the top.

Garvin

If I modify the comment.php file directly, am I not just going to get my modifications lost every time I update the blog via svn?
I have quite a few blogs and sometimes the sysadmin updates them, i have lost customisations in this way in the past.

Yes, you'd lose the file when you did an update. But it's the least resource-intensive of all the possible solutions.

To make the change persistent across upgrades, disable the trackbacks in the Spam Protector plugin.
