Top Referrers Problems

Post by Celebri-Net »

First off I would like to thank the creators of Serendipity along with all of the people who continually contribute to this forum, as I have found much needed help to my site simply by reading their posts. I am truly grateful for ever finding Serendipity.

Now to the problem. I have done a lot of searching throughout this forum in hopes of finding a solution to what I feel must be a very simple problem with my 'Top Referrers' Sidebar plugin, but have come up short. I currently own a site called Celebri-Net located at http://www.celebri-net.com/serendipity , (SFW but some of the extended entries are NSFW, check next to each post for safe icon) which mostly deals with rare and exclusive Celebrity photos, gossip and especially clips, mixed with a few random posts of personal interests, such as the latest Xbox360 or PS3 news and trailers, or a PeeWee Herman Crack PSA.

Originally when I first added the plugin, with in a couple of minutes the 'Top Referrers' listed 2 sites, unfortunately those 2 sites were www.Celebri-Net.com ( the original location of my site, pre-Serendipity, which now has a redirection to the serendipity folder) and forum.Celebri-Net.com (the forum side of my site). The next day when I went to look at my site the two sites were gone and I haven't seen anything there since. At first I figured perhaps there haven't been any referrers to my new location yet, but soon realized there was a problem with the plugin. I did a whole lot of searching for others who may have encountered the same problem, as I have done before with any problems I have had with Serendipity, but after trying a few suggestions Garvin and others had provided, including removing all of my other plugins, I still had no success.

Please take a look at the site (Its very nice to look at), and see if any one might be able to help me.

Thanx again for the awesome product,
Celebri-Net

Hi!

First off, great that you enjoy Serendipity. :)

As you seem to have already browsed the forum, you maybe saw my standard reply regarding the top refferrers: The Code contains a "safe list" so that referrers first go into the "serendipity_suppress" table and there move into the referrers table after some kind of boundary limit.

However the code that does this has never been clear to me and is one of the parts of serendipity that were there long time before I joined the project.

What I'm trying to say: I don't really understand the logic of it, and when I try to understand it, my brain hurts. ;) Plus, the top referrers are very likely to get pretty much spammed, and we yet have no way to delete specific referrers from the list. So currently we would really need a developer that is motivated to look into the referrer tracking... *g*

Best regards,
Garvin

Hi, I also have a problem with top referrers plug in. I know through the statistics plug-in that I am getting some traffic from other sites but nothing shows up on the top referrers. It remains blank.

Could you send the link to "your standard reply" to the top referrer question that you, uh, well, referred to in your response Mr. Garvin?

Thanks.

Hi!

Sadly I have no link to my standard reply, so you will need to search the forum for "top referrer", I'm sorry *g*

It boils down to: I don't know the code, and it's serously wicked. Since I personally don't require referrer analysers (I use google Analytics), my motivation to look into this specific plugin is quite low. Added to that, the spam abuse is just too high, so this does not really rectify spending much time on it, as the spam abuse problem can not really be solved.

Best regards,
Garvin
