Exporting from Serendipity to a serendipity host

Hi,

I am running serendipity 0.79 at home and I now want to move my blog to an external host. The only way I can see of exporting the data (because the external host doesn't allow shell access) is to use the serendipity export function.

When I try and import this into the external hosts serendipity it doesn't import the comments.

Is there a way round this?

Hi!

If you have phpMyAdmin access, you can easily migrate the database and all data as described in the FAQ on www.s9y.org.

I don't have any access other than the Serendipity user interface.

Any other suggestions?

It is quite likely that I may end up just moving my whole installation to a private hosting firm that supports PHP, & MySQL.

Hi!

So you also don't have FTP access to install your own phpMyAdmin on the site?

If not, maybe you can ask your server provider if he can provide you with a SQL dump as well as the ziped files for upload + configuration?

Else I don't see a way to migrate your content; the RSS export feature always lacks lot of information.

In my opinion it seems a massive limitation that you can import all blog information from all other blogs, but when you want to export and import from and to serendipity you can't?!?!?

Hi!

Well, in my opinion its a massive limitation that you don't have FTP access to your blog!

Without FTP access to a blog, you could also not migrate the data of any other blog system we are able to import.

Also note that the usual SQL dump mechanism works flawlessly and migrates ALL data; serendipity cannot migrate EVERYTHING from any other blog system.

So, no reason to get offended. Do you have FTP access, or don't you?

Hi, Gavin.

I'm in a similar situation. I discovered S9y at GoDaddy and chose it for content management of a multi-author site (Alliterates.com). Now that I'm moving from GoDaddy to Bluehost, I find that there's no direct access to the Serendipity database at GoDaddy. I have FTP access to the blog, but no way to export the MySQL database contents driving it.

Faced with that, it's disheartening to see so many ways to import entries into S9y, but only RSS for an export.

Here's hoping WebYog will give the MySQL export I need.

did you try the backup-plugin? This plugin has access to the database.
