Hi,
I am a novice user of blogs and config websites, and just added your blog to my site.(http://www.polymerconcepts.net/id3.html) via Cedant web hosting. I have the "let users subscribe" option selected, but do not see how user will subscribe when they visit the blog. I also wanted to use the Send email plug-in and mailists to annouce new postings etc. I see from the forum that sending mail is not part of this pkg, but I can setup Mailists via the hosting service, but not clear on how to config it all to work.
How do users subscribe to my blog?
I also have three categories: General, Distributors, and Service Network. I'm unclear as to how I would allow these people access to their area.

In this post, for example, I subscribed to your blog, and then I can check Notify me when a reply is posted - how would I do something like that on my blog?

Hi!

Nice to know you're getting to start with Serendipity. :)

The subscribe option usually applies to RSS feeds (see wikipedia or google for 'RSS') - but as you already found the "Send E-Mail" plugin, you can set that up via the s9y configure plugin panel to post new entries to a specific e-mail address (aka mailinglist)

Visitors of an entry to your blog can make a comment and then check the "notify me on new comments" option. Usually the concept of blogs is that people subscribe to RSS feeds on their own to stay updated.

But you could hook in a simple "HTML Nugget" sidebar plugin where people can enter their email address and then you forward them to the mailng list signup interface of your app (or a free yahoo mailinglist or whatever)

Thanks for the info. I may try to look for that HTML nugget you mentioned. That would certainly help us maintain the maillists.

I've installed the Send email plug-in, and have a maillist setup in my mail, however, if I go to an entry (edit or new) it provides the Advanced Option below the message text field, but I don't see where I can enter the maillist email address so that when I post this it sends the annoucement to the folks on that list. Am I missing something in my Configuration?

Hi!

You can enter the email addresses wher eto send a mail to in the Plugin Configuration of the "Send E-Mail" plugin!

Make sure to not confuse this plugin with the "e-Mail Entry" plugin, which does something different!

Best regards,
Garvin

Ah - see I think that's where I am having the problem - confusing the two.
If I use the Send entries via e-mail plug-in, I can enter one of my mailists, but I have more than one. Example: we have three categories: General, Distributors and PCI Network. We wanted to be able to send an email to the maillist we have for each whenever we have a new post to that area. (General being for both) If I use the Annouce entries plug-in, it just gives me that list of online services - and I don't know what to do with that or how my end-users would get it either.

Hi!

Announce entries is one completely different plugin as well. :)

You can configure the "Send E-Mail" plugin (NOT "e-Mail Entry!") to send a mail to different categories. I think this is only available in current alpha versions of serendipity 1.1, though. You can get the plugin from that version and use it in 1.0, though.

Ah well I'm running Serendipity 0.9.1 and PHP 4.4.2 and the only plug ins I see that say anything relating to email, annouce are those two I mentioned, which sounds like those are not what you are referring to

Looks like we need the upgrade - I see the zip file on your site, but that would need to be installed on my host's server (Cedant) side?

Perhaps I should just try a bboard :-(

Hi!

You can fetch the plugin from here:

http://svn.berlios.de/viewcvs/*checkout ... mailer.php

Just put that file into your plugins/serendipity_event_mailer/ directory and replace the current one in there!

Hi,
Sorry for the delay, I got pulled to some other projects. So I got that file, (thnaks) placed it in the directory specified (replacing the one that was there) and now my blog is hosed? See: http://polyweb1.web.cedant.com/cblog/index.php

What now?

Hi!

It seems that you saved the file with HTML formatting instead of PHP formatting! All the "<" things are converted to html entites, so that PHP code could not be parsed...

Weird; it's including the text instead of executing it as code.

What are the permissions for the file?
