When installing s9y you can choose the 'rewrite' method. Either mod_rewrite, apache errordocs or 'none'. Just choose none or errordocs in that dropdown of the configuration.

Ah, that's fine. s9y will only show the "next month" arrow, if the previous (or current) month contains entries. So if you create an entry for today, the 'next month' arrow should come to view.
