Make sure the file serendipity_config.inc.php and the folder templates_c/ are both writable. You can determine this through your FTP client by looking at the properties of those two things. I use Serendipity because it has everything I need without being bloated. It's very user-friendly, has loads of great plugins & themes, and the support is top notch. But I'm biased and love s9y anyway. ;P

The error happens because your LJ update plugin is failing. Either uninstall it, or try to configure it with the proper LJ credentials.

That means the username/pass combination is probably incorrect.

You could always install a sidebar HTML nugget. It worked out fine for me.
