Can't turn off spam control on my own comments

I've been trying to turn off spam control on my own comments but I still have to enter the special text, and even then I have to approve my own comments.
I've tried disabling spamblock for Administrator (me), Chief Editor, and Standard Editor but it makes no difference.
I really want to be able to enter my own comments without spam control and without having to approve them myself. Is this possible?

Actually, after a little more experimentation I think I've found that the modifications do work on NEW posts but not on old ones. That is, if I make a new entry in the blog I can then add comments without problems.
It's the existing ones I can't do it for. Is this correct?
