Personal blog, new template, any suggestions?

Hi all,

I've been working on a new design for my blog. It can be found here
I still need to fix up a few small formatting problems, specifically why the font looks different for sidebar headers and entry headers but I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Once I'm happy with the final result I would be happy to share the design (but not the teddy bear) with other bloggers. Any comments or suggestions would really be appreciated.

Thanks,
Carl

Hi Col Kurtz,

Thank you. The 2 column sidebar is left and right. I changed my index.tpl file to swap left and center columns, then had to make some changes to padding and margins in the stylesheet to make it play nice. I used the default template index.tpl and copied it into my new template folder.

detail page blows out, needs shift refresh in firefox

Hi all,

I've noticed that the detail page for my theme sometimes gets blown out by a couple hundred pixels in firefox, I think it has something to do with the comment form. A shift-refresh brings it back down to the correct scale. It doesn't seem to do this in IE.

Is this a bug with firefox, or something wrong with my styles?

Thanks,
Carl

I've been hearing similar complaints from other FireFox users. I think it's a FF thing (despite my own heavy FF leanings. I just despise IE).

I also enjoy your theme! If you've got it all shiny and polished, and you want to contribute it, I would love to put it into our template repository!

FIxed couple of formatting errors

Hi all,

Thank you for your comments. Interesting that Firefox might be at fault, the shame is that until recently I was using Linux and never had that problem then I go back to Windows and it causes problems.

I've fixed up the font problem I was having between sidebar titles and entry titles, and also fixed some padding and margin errors, and even created a little preview.png

The last thing I want to do is add a favicon to the template. Garvin, I would be really happy to contribute my theme, do I email it to you, or should I post it on my blog and you download it from there?

Does anyone else have any other comments about the theme before I contribute it?

Just done a quick google on the formatting error in firefox and came across this article at Sitepoint

I'm not sure how to fix this because I don't think I've got a wrapper div. The page is actually formatted with a basic table. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Garvin, I'll email the template as soon as I've fixed the fifrefox problem, and added the favicon. A couple of days?

Also, I've registered on this forum under the same username I've been using, just need to activate account.

Cheers
Carl

Carl: Sure, take your time! You might want to use utilities like Aardvark, EditCSS and slayeroffice.com/?c=/content/tools/modi.html for some help on finding the CSS thingies. If you own a Mac, go for Xyloscope.

I also think it has to do with the % width of input elements within the comment form.

HTH,
Garvin

firefox problem fixed? (page breaking out of boundaries)

Hi all,

The firefox problem looks like its been fixed (I hope). I followed the advice given in the Sitepoint article and added overflow:auto; to mainpane in the stylesheet.

By clearing the cache and revisiting the site the problem appears to have been fixed. Garvin, your suggestion to use the slayeroffice mod favelet was spot on and I was able to identify the offending div pretty quickly. Thank you for that.

Cheers
Carl
