Revert 2.0.x to 1.7.x

Is it possible to revert the newer s9y to an older one... I know in the past we could modify serendipity_config_local to an older version to trigger upgrading in the event of a bad upgrade, but wasn't sure if we could revert, especially with the possibility of database changes.

I need to do this to more carefully document what DID work on a specifically install running 1.7.8, vs. what no longer works with 2.0.x

Yes, just by serendipity_config_local.inc.php file to trigger upgrader routine or additonal in serendipity_config.inc.php to set version back to 1.7.8.
There were no db updates running from 1.7.8 to 2.0.0 AFAIK.

Thanks Ian. I will give it a try.

I have to admit doing the second without immediately upgrading is not something you might really feel to be a 1.7.8 version, since still using all backend 2.0 changes with an old version number though. You can just use this resets to run the autoupdater and/or only the upgrader tasks again.

It didn't really work perfectly... one of my problems was that it seems one or more plugins that were in the core are now stand alone? Regardless, I was able to verify the issues I needed to, and will now begin working on theme modifications for 2.0 compliance for a specific theme.

All of them. There are no core plugins in the old sense anymore.

Happy you solved the issue anyway :)
