THe area is in the sitemap generator plugin.
Here is what it says:

Enable GoogleNews content YES checked.
Merge GoogleNews sitemap with normal sitemap? YES NO
This option only applies if you have enabled GoogleNews content. If enabled, the normal sitemap.xml file will contain GoogleNews markup. When disabled, only the news_sitemap.xml file will contain GoogleNews formatted data. If you have more than then allowed 1000 blog articles, you must disable this option to not confuse the GoogleSpiders with your "normal" sitemap.

I have 8000 articles and have it GZIPED.
So I just don't know what to do there.

Hi!

Set the "merge" option to "No", and advertise your googleNews content only as "news_sitemap.xml.giz" instead "sitemap.xml.gzip".

But I am still unclear.
If I make a new sitemap.xml.gizp and rename it news_sitemap.xml.gzip, having both in the root will have the new articles written to both?

Or am I to change the present
sitemap.xml.gzip
to
news_sitemap.xml.giz
and it will still be picked up by the original links?

The plugin creates those two files. You do not create any files yourself.

After submitting articles this is the result

Could not open the outfile for writing. (/home/kick/public_html//news_sitemap.xml.gz)

The file is not in the root public_html where the sitemap files are.

public_html is at 775, everything checked except, public write

There are over 8000 articles in the DB

Reason for this is every so often I manage to come up with the right combination of keywords and get 10,000+ hits a day for a few days. I think GOOGLE NEWS may just pick me up when that happens.

Make sure your public_html directory is writable for the webserver user. Or you create a empty news_sitemap.xml and xml.gz file that you make writable for the server.
