I have "earned" a couple hundred SPAM trackbacks while I was away (not sure how they got there because I have "no comments or trackbacks" marked but that is another issue) is there a way to delete all of these at once instead of sitting here and ticking each and everyone?

You can use the "invert selections" link to select all the deselected items and deselect all the selected items. One easy way to handle mass spam is to load up the comment page, invert selections, deselect any ham among the spam, and hit delete.
