wppremium - revising comment appearance

I'm working on modifying the wppremium theme I picked up from yellowled here: http://yellowled.de/ports.en.html
I'm trying to figure out how to change the physical appearance of comments. For example, I want to move the date posted from on top of the user comments like is is currently (see http://linux-blog.org ) and put the date and time under the authors name and justify it left. Then I want to justify the actual comment to the right of the gravatar/authorname/date to the right. Also having the comments separated by a hr would make for better reading.
Here is what I have:
Here is a mockup of what I want:
The problem is, I don't know where to go to do this. I've looked inside the CSS and used the web developer extension to identify where the comments are getting their style from...but the problem is that they are getting their style from global CSS and I don't want to alter that if I don't have to. Do I need to create my own class to house this and then call it there so it doesn't effect things? How do I get to where I need to? Please be gentle...I know CSS but I don't know S9y styling.
