Is there a way to switch off RSS feeds? I mean, get rid of the icons and checkboxes near the category names?

Go to the Plugins section on your admin page. Open the Category plugin preferences.

To disable the rss image enter 'none' into the 'XML-Button' text field. To disable the checkboxes choose 'no' in the '...display multiple categories...' section.
