OK, finally got it! Thanks to everyone for replies, espcially Garvin.
I finally realized (a bit slow on the uptake, you see) that the exported database brings its login stuff with it, so I simply needed to use the same username and password as on the previous server. Sorry to make such heavy weather of something that was actually very simple. (Not the first time that has happened to me.)
