Hi Everyone,

Been a while since I checked in, but on the subject of updating the default template to using the bulletproof code, my opinion is this;

As part of the competition, copyright in the winning design was transferred to the Serendipity project, specifically to Jannis and Garvin as caretakers of the code.

Some changes to the default template have already been made to keep it functioning with upgraded versions of Serendipity and conversion to bulletproof is simply a logical step to take.

It would be great of my contribution to the design would still be recognised, however if this isn't practical or desired by the members then the will of the majority should prevail.

My contribution to the Serendipity world is minimal now, better and more capable theme designers have stepped in. I like the bulletproof design, I think it should be the framework used in future versions of Serendipity. I also think my user rights here (moderator) should be revoked in favour of yellowled, don chambers, d_cee and others who contribute more.

I have some health issues that mean I'm unlikely to play much role in Serendipity in the future, my single overriding aim being to generate as much passive income as I can. Good luck converting the default template, thanks everyone.

That is true for all of us as the forum has been down for approximately 3 days until just a very short time ago!! :D

You are acknowledged in the colorset we are creating to emulate your "serendipity 3.0" template. This is the header information from that stylesheet:

Code: Select all

/**********************************************************************/
/* Template: bulletproof for Serendipity (http://www.s9y.org)         */
/* Authors: Matthias Mees, David Cummins and Don Chambers */
/*                                                                    */
/* Stylesheet for the colorset 'serendipity' */
/* Design inspired by Serendipity 3.0 by Carl Galloway */
/*                                                                    */
/* http://s9y-bulletproof.com                                         */
/**********************************************************************/
No "name" has been absolutely determined for this colorsheet... at the moment, we are working with Garvin to fine tune the details, but the current thinking is that Bulletproof itself might become the default template, with this "colorset" being the default colorset. Currently, the default is the purple colorset.

Of course, by "default", it only means the default template selected when s9y is first installed.... it will not replace the contents of /templates/default/ as far as I know - which means bulletproof's cool admin design will only be used if the template remains bp, or one of the templates created from the bp framework.
better and more capable theme designers have stepped in.
I'm not sure about the use of either term "better" or "more capable". I have no formal education in html, css, php or smarty. In fact, I believe that description applies to YL & d_cee as well. I personally have not released a single template on my own (that is about to change). The only thing in the serendipity world that I have created on my own is the bp admin template.... and again, I would not say it is better than anything you, or anyone else, have created. I just like to think that it is merely a different interpretation of what the admin interface CAN be.

Ultimately, BP is the culmination of many different ideas... including many of your own. I can tell you that, except for some minor revisions, the bp navbar quicksearch thing is something I swiped from one of your templates!! LOL!! But that is true of many aspects of BP. Little code bits from the best of a lot of different things. Besides, how much "better" would any template be if it had multiple contributors each pouring anywhere between a few, and several hundred, hours into it? :lol:

I'm not sure what your health issues are, but I hope they are not serious. I've seen your blog entries and look forward to reading more about your latest efforts.

Garvin has already asked to keep the carl_contest port as close to the original as possible - we have agreed to do that, although we might want to "update" or better: spruce it up a little. It will still be recognizable as it is :)

I'll say what I usually say: glad you like it :)

However, your contribution is definitely not minimal. You may be a bit rusty in terms of template design, but you have inspired and helped many people, including myself. So stop writing your own eulogy :wink:

I hope it's nothing, well, too serious :(
