Can't edit/replace .tpl files

Post by bloggerkaren »

I am using Serendipity 0.8-beta6 and PHP 4.3.1. I am trying to play with the layout and have downloaded the index.tpl file. As a test, I changed only the "Poered by" text to see if my changes show. However, when I upload the change to a theme folder, the page is blank. This is true with several of the themes. Kubrick does not show up - it is a blank screen when I set it as default, and moz-modern shows up, but if I try to edit or even just download and open the file (making no changes) and re-upload the file, I get a blank screen. I tried using Homesite and just Notebook. Seems like opening the file somehow makes it unreadable. Has anyone else experienced this?

I meant Notepad, not Notebook.

I've never experienced this. I guess when you re-upload the file again you assign wrong read/write permissions so serendipity cannot read the file. Or you uplad the file as index.tpl.htm instead but serendipity relies on tha index.tpl file. Or maybe you upload the file with wrong binary upload mode...well, it could be a bunch of problems, but all are pointing to you. ;-)

Just to be sure, can you tell me what your permissions are set to?
I am really about to pull my hair out. I can upload/overwrite clean files (ie the backed up copies). There is just some problem when I open and save. Thanks

777 would temporarily do, but I'm not really sure what the problem is on your client/server-side...

Maybe if you are using HTML-preview or WYSIWYG editing in homesite, that can serously screw up your index.tpl file.
