Static Pages help for HTML illiterate newbie to serendipity

Post by bree2706 »

Hello,
I recently started a blog on supersized (http://heartful.supersized.org/) and I am trying to set up my static pages. I have the plug in installed, but when I go to edit or create my pages, I do not understand what I am missing. Perhpas I have the wrong path written for the permalink, and I don't understand what "URL shorthand name (backwards compatability)" means. I don't know what to put in that blank.

I also don't understand the difference between an article and an overview.

Would I need to put anything where it asks about parent pages? I don't understand what that is either.

Please forgive me for my ignorance of this stuff. Perhaps if there is a tutorial you could point me to, I would be grateful.

Thank you very much.

Hi!

As the permalink, you would need to enter something like "/pages/mystaticpage.html". Forthe URL shorthand name enter "mystaticpage".

then you can seeyour staticpage by using http://heartful.supersized.org/pages/mystaticpage.html
I also don't understand the difference between an article and an overview.
An article shows the actual text of your static page. An overview page only shows a summary of an articleand browses through child pages of a static page.

Parent/child pages are a concept for showing hierarchical information, like a book with chapters.

Thank you, Still having difficulty with Static Page

Post by bree2706 »

Hello again.

Thanks for your reply. Still having trouble getting a static page running. First, let me see if my assumption is correct:

*If I type the correct path for my about me page in the administration suite for static pages, will I be able to click on the page tab link on my home (front)page and be taken to the about me page? (Is this correct?)

The template design I am using has these tabs: Homepage, About Me, Photos, and Login. I am trying to get an 'About Me' page running, and then I will do photos.

When I click on the About Me link, this is the URL that shows up on my browser: http://heartful.supersized.org/about.html. However, the content I see on the page is that of my homepage. (Nothing changes) I do not see the content that I typed on the static page of the admin suite.

This is what I have in the permalink on administration page: http://heartful.supersized.org/about.html, with URL shorthand name: about. Is this correct?

I show it in admin as published, and as an article. I see also there is a blank for password. Does this mean I must enter a password?

I know I have a jumble of questions. Thanks for your help!

No, you would first need to insert the right page link into the page tab link onto your homepage! you are using a template where those links can be configured by going to your "manage style" s9y backend section.
This is what I have in the permalink on administration page: http://heartful.supersized.org/about.html, with URL shorthand name: about. Is this correct?
No, you should use a path like "/pages/about.html" instead, you should have at lead one directory level. Also do not enter the full http:// location, only the path itself!

Thank you Garvin. I visited your website but couldn't read a thing in German. Anyway, I tried!

Thank you for your help on the static page path stuff. I did get it to work finally thanks to you! My next question has to do with my "About Me" page. When I click on "About Me" from my homepage, it takes me to where I need. Great! Yet, at the top of the page is a phantom box that has two links in it, both that say "about me". Because of it, my "About me" information doesn't start where I want it on the page, it is dropped down a bit. Can you tell me how to fix it? I do not want the box there, nor the links.

Thank you!

Hi!

That is a bit of a problem. If you had your own s9y installation, you could easily edit the template file of how staticpages are formatted. But on supersized.org, you don't have FTP access to edit any files, so you can't really change that and must live with it.

You might want to think about getting your own webspace and setting up serendipity there?

Edit your static page and uncheck the box marked "Show Navigation on this page".... should be about the second from last check box.

Thanks so much! I am considering my own hosting, but for now I will stick with what I've got while I figure out what I'm doing.

Thank you for all your help.
