What are trackbacks and are they needed.

Trackbacks are simply links to one of your entries. People can link back to your entries in their own blogs, and your own blog will notify you when this happens. It will show up in your entry like a comment.

You do not have to use this feature.

You can disable it in your Admin screen under the Comments section. There will be a button that says "Configure Anti-Spam Methods". On that page, look for "What to do with trackbacks when being auto-moderated?" and check the box for Reject.

Hmmmm, i look under Comments and these options are not available....

You must installed "Spam Protector" plugin before this plugin can be used. It can be found in the Serendipity Event Plugin. You can install it online with spartacus or download it from spartacus and manually install this plugin.

Yea, well, it is installed, and I still don't have the options you mention...

I got up this morning to over a hundred of these damned trackbacks and I have no way to prevent them.

EDIT:
I go back to my plugins page, I was just about to uninstall Serendiptiy altogether... and POOF, now there is another line to install SPam Protector that was not there before... I had downloaded the one SURBL, the other did not show in my list, now it does... so I am attempting to configure it now...

On one of my Serendipity blogs, I allowed trackbacks with moderation and next thing I knew, I was spending too much time deleting spam!
I have original works on my site that it would be nice to be able to allow trackbacks. However, even though I put my settings to "moderate trackbacks", trackbacks selling everything from Viagra to satellite TV still showed up.
I decided it would be alot less hassle not to allow trackbacks. Unfortunately, those who wish to link to a specific article cannot now...
