Is there something to show how many users are currently viewing the site or is it planned?

There currently is no such plugin; we do have a phpopentracker plugin with which you could output the last-seen visitors with a bit of code.

Or a new plugin outputting that wouldn't be too hard; in fact it would be a good plugin as training exercise. Capsulated, small, perfect for your first plugin, right?

OK, i simply put some very basic user (at least with ip-lock) and online counters into two little iframes within a html nugget. It works for now: www.wolfgang-stommel.de
