Why I didn't switch to WordPress

Post by Garrett Albright »

I was recently considering switching from S9y to WordPress, but in the end I decided against it. Serendipity, with its bugs and quirks, was still a better fit for me than WordPress. I wrote up an entry for my tech-related blog that outlines the reasons why I decided to stick with Serendipity; you may find it of interest.

How about you? In light of WordPress's hegemony among PHP blogging apps, why are you choosing to use Serendipity?

Well, there are some points.

I like s9y, because its not as big as WordPress... everyone uses WordPress. Some days you only see WordPress-Blogs. And in some days you will only see WordPress-Blogs ... all the time! WordPress is everywhere ... ahhh! WordPress is, what eBay is to online auctions in the internet.

I like to advertise/push projects, that are worth to be pushed - and s9y is such a project!

I like the wonderful, unbelievable support!

... and, damn yes - I like the name

My main reason for sticking with Serendipity is the template format and ease of use. The only other blog software I would consider (and bloat wear) is PIVOT and NUCLEUS but I don't like the editors and or the way you have to format your entries to get them to look right.

Serendipity for ease of use hands down.

I use Serendipity because it has everything I need without being bloated. It's very user-friendly, has loads of great plugins & themes, and the support is top notch. But I'm biased and love s9y anyway. ;P

I originally used Serendipity because it was the only blog that didn't want to take over my entire website. It even said it could be embedded in my existing site! (I had some Google-ranked pages for Palm applications that simply could not change.)

Then I realized how easy it was to reimplement my old site in Serendipity. That gave the ugly old page a new, customizable look. When I wanted something special, I found out how easy it is to install Serendipity plugins. When I wanted something not covered by a plugin, I found out that writing the plugins is pretty simple, too.

And when I had problems, I discovered that the Serendipity Forums (and Garvin in particular) provide world-class support.

I can't imagine using anything else any more. Serendipity rocks!
