Who is interested in a S9y User/Developer Meeting in autumn

Post by robert »

This is a crossposting from the german language forum.

Serendipity v1.1 has just been released, v1.2 is on it's way, and we meet almost every day to share our thoughts on new features and adding new tools ... but we only do it "virtually". Isn't it about time for a "real" meeting?

I'd like to get some feedback what you (the s9y community) think about having a s9y camp in the fall of 2007? s9y camp like BarCamp, which I've been following closely lately. In BarCamps, people meet and give "spontaneous" lectures, workshops, discussions, etc. Isn't that something? There are a lot of topics the developers, template designers, and users of s9y could share. Exchanging ideas on new plugins, swapping code snippets, customizing themes, thoughts on usability and accessibility ... and along the way meeting the faces connected with board messages and blog entries. (The latter might very well be the most interesting part of the meeting.)

Now, this is just a call for feedback. What do you think about it? Which topic would you be interested in? Would you like to join in?

The feed back determines, if and what happens next.

Also important: choosing a place. I'd love to "invite" you to Vienna, Austria, and I'd also be willing to prepare organising it.

So, please share you thoughts on this. At this point, this is all about approval, things to consider, ideas, questions, etc. - but most of all, this is about finding out whether the community would be interested in an s9y camp at all.

(Thanx to YellowLed for his translation!!!)

When is autumn in Vienna? In principle I'd be interested but I'd need to get there first.

I'm not sure about Vienna, but usually Mideuropeans think of late August, September/October when the speak of autumn.

Vienna is also a mideuropean city (I think so ;-) - with a better link to east europa...

There is no specific date now - but September/October/November would be a good time.

In the german forum, there is a discussion about a city in the middle of germany - because it´s better for travelling.

But: please give your suggestions and ideas. I will collect and summarize all. In a further step we can coordinate the location, the date (how long - one, two, three days?) and possible topics.

My Working Title is "S9yCamp" as I prefer the idea to handle it like a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcamp.

Ok, so Autumn 2007 sounds good to me, just have to convince the other half that its a good idea, then we need to get there.

Robert, I realise you're only looking for expressions of interest, but can you tell us any more about how you see this unfolding. Are you going to hire a venue with conference facilities or do you plan to host this yourself?

I imagine most of us will bring our laptops but will facilities be available to connect to the net or network amongst each other?

As for topics, I'd be most interested in theming, standards and usability, documentation, community development, and of course socialising - bring it on!!!

BTW, I've organised a lot of conferences in the past and given keynote speeches so if you need any help let me know.

Carl - your Speech is essential!! Who could bring us more informations about Theming for S9y!

More details about the facilities. Sorry, I don´t have it.

If the majority votes for a city in germany, I cann´t do that - its to far from me to organize this. It´s the question who can do this.

In Vienna I could probably organize a "pretty small hall" - but with seperate workshop rooms and up to 20 computers with internet.

In both ways, I think it would be (but I could fail) a small conference with 10 -20 persons (but enough for a good working and talking and socializing climate).

If there is a interest, we have much work til autumn - but it could be worth :-)

I have tried to read the German thread, and I think that my vote for location would be anywhere that would get the most people to attend. I would like to see some of the US based people attend as well, and for them flights to Vienna or one of the big international airports would be better. I hope to be in Europe by then anyway and will happily drive to any location.

I read about setting up a wiki to manage this - shame - we are bloggers! Lets use Supersized to host the s9ycamp, or if you want I will happily give Robert and all the other organisers of this full access to the blog on s9y-users.com

mattsches asked for info about plugins, I would be very interested in a training session where non-programmers could learn how to add php scripts into a plugin. I understand basic php but I don't know how to develop plugins.

I would also like to see a brainstorming session on the future of Serendipity as we move past v1.2. Maybe by the time of the s9ycamp we'll already be at v1.3, but what will that have in it?

We had the same discussion about a wiki in the german forum. You are right, it´s a shame ;-)

Thanks for the offer of open s9y-users for us. Some minutes ago I registered http://s9ycamp.supersized.org/

A training session about php programming would be very interesting. Brainstorming about 1.2 or 1.3 could be very inspiring. It´s not only a questions about features, it could be also a question about accessibility and usability (for example your discussion thread with ex-serviceman from RAF Halton).

It would be a pleasure for me to see all of you in Vienna. But I think for the most german speaking people a place in the center of Germany is more "comfortable".

The town which has been mentioned in the German thread (Kassel) - at least as far as I know - doesn't offer a big international airport, but it's rather close to Frankfurt/Main, which should "suffice" ;-)

I love the idea, but my attendance would be based on time, timing, and money. *grin*

I'll keep an eye on the planning (if you can give us updates in English from time to time) and I will try to figure out a way to do it.

Sounds fun and interesting! (And it is probably about time to do something like this.)

I notice Robert has updated the German thread and it appears he is saying that a local restaurant(?) would be available to him. If this is going to go ahead we do need to look at the facilities for cabling. A small confined space like a restaurant is not such a comfortable place when you have hundreds of power leads and network cables criss crossing the floor. We would be better to get somewhere like a hall or school so that all the cables can be in the center of the room with tables arranged around the outside. Are there any church or club halls in Kassel that could be hired? Also, does Kassel have good Internet access?

This sounds like a dream! I would love nothing better than to eat good German sausage and sauerkraut with you guys. Unfortunately, there's no way I can possibly make it. Family and all.

Enjoy it, and bring back all the juicy gossip for us landlocked folks!
