Side Bar Size

Hello all I have a quick question that I'm sure has been answered plenty of times already by garvinhicking, but that I can't seem to find when I search for it on the forum.

I'm not sure if it matters but I'm using the very attractive "glossy white" template by Christian Hoffmann, and was just wondering if and/or how do you increase the size of your side bar. See I'm trying to add a video player within the right side bar of my site (Which specializes in providing the best, and most exclusive Celebrity Media Content from Celebrity Gossip and Pics, to animated Gifs and revealing clips [small plug]), but the player is 300 pixels wide and 250 pixel high. I believe currently the maximum width available without running off the edge of the side bar is 190 pixels.

Also while I still have your attention I was curious to find out whether or not you have found a solution to the ever so popular "top referrer's" plug-in problem that you had already responded to me about. Or perhaps you might have a suggestion on some other form of displaying my referrers on your sweet Serendipity Blog interface? I noticed that you mention that you check your refers through GoDaddy (as I do), and I was wondering if you knew of a way to incorporate their statistic page into my sites FrontPage. I have had a few complaints from a couple of random sources who frequently link to an article from my site, and unfortunately do not get any visual credit for it.

Let's see, there's #mainpane (width: 770px), #content (width: 400px, padding left/right total: 100px) and #serendipityRightSideBar (width: 200px, margin-right: 15px) with #mainpane being a container for the latter two.

If you change this to #content { width: 280px; } and #serendipityRightSideBar {width: 320px; }, it should work with the player, however this screws up the background images for the sidebar. You'd have to make glossy_white/img/sideheader.jpg wider (320px) with i.e. Gimp or Photoshop, same with glossy_white/img/sidebg.jpg and glossy_white/img/sidefooter.jpg. You might also want to think about enlarging #mainpane to have more space available for #content, i.e. #mainpane {width: 890px; } to leave #content at 400px width - on the other hand this would mean you'd probably have to edit more images ... this template is very 'graphical' which makes it hard to do stuff like this 'on the fly' ...

I can't express my appreciation enough for your help, I was able to make the necessary corrections and allow a bigger side bar area. Thank you YellowLed for your speedy reply, I took your advice to also widen my #mainplain to 890px in the style.css to allow for a more complimenting content to side bar width ratio.

Oh and guess what I thought I would check out the "Top Referrer" plug-in, and was some how able to finally get that thing to work. I wish I could instruct future victims of the flaw filled plug-in on exactly what I did to make it work, but unfortunately I just started changing options in the "Event_Statistic" and "Top referrer" plug-ins and just noticed that the links showed up. If it helps I believe I changed the "Calendar item frequency" in the "Top Referrer" plug-in from 0 to 1 (which I was almost sure I had previously changed to 0 from a different number in an experimental attempt to fix the plug-in) that got it to work. Either way it's working with the "1" and I'm not changing it anytime soon.

Also, if for some reason it may have helped, I downloaded the "Statistic" and "Top referrer" plug-ins off of my server and onto my "Dream weaver" program and re-uploaded it back onto the site without changing anything. I can't seem to see how that might trigger anything into working properly, but I was just doing a bunch of random things and trying to see if it might help fix the plug-ins and it wasn’t until I re-uploaded the plug-ins that I noticed that the "Referral" links were showing back up on my site.

You do of course know that this means people with a small desktop resolution/browser window will have to scroll?

I don't want to be rude, but if you want to express your appreciation, I suggest you stop bloating your posts with advertisements for your site. A link in the signature should be enough.

Darn, that thought never crossed my mind. I think I'll choose the lesser of two evils though, and keep my newly widened interface.

I can assure you YL my reasons behind the links to my articles in my pervious post were to add some personality and interesting comical banter to a standard conventionally impersonal "Thank You" response. As you can tell from my newly operational "Top Referrers" side bar(), S9y.org as a whole doesn’t really drive much traffic to my site; as our topics don't have very much in common.

I just wanted you to know that I am truly grateful for your help and appreciate the time you took to help me. If you feel my intentions were to mock or use that gratitude reply to Spam my site, then I am really sorry for the confusion and hope that you now know that your efforts are respected and greatly appreciated.
