Time to Talk About SEO For s9y Again

Post by johncanary »

Hello everyone,

It has been a while since I visited this forum last time. …

The S9Y Info Camp podcast features a discussion about SEO from two years ago.
http://www.s9ycamp.info/archives/25-Ausgabe-23-SEO.html

Last week at the Pubcon conference in Las Vegas/Nevada/USA, Gary Illyes, search engineer at Google, has announced that Google moves to mobile first indexing since 85% of the results are mobile friendly already. Sites that are not mobile friendly will further loose ground in the Google game.

A year ago Google has come up with an open source project that defines in new terms what mobile friendly means: “Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)” <https://www.ampproject.org/>.

1.) Any thoughts or future plans for supporting AMP with S9Y?

Secondly Google might as well favor sites that run exclusively on HTTPS in the near to medium future as well.

2.) What's involved with forcing HTTPS of a S9Y site?

Does the current S9Y version (and set of plugins, templates if applicable) support that already?

Looking forward to hear from you.
Cheers
John

P.S.: Some additional resources (without http because of the 4 URL restriction)

P.P.S.: I didn't blog much lately, slowly starting again. Will move from s9y V1.7 to the latest one, and using responsive theme, and moving from blog.-subdomain to /blog/ directory on main domain shortly.

As far as I know, there are no plans for implementing it at the moment. As usual, this would first need a developer to be willing to spend time on implementing it, most likely in the form of a plugin.

Also, AMP is not without downsides. Marketing and tracking is limited, as is design. I haven't followed AMP development in a while, but it did set out to be basically a performance optimiziation for static content of big news sites. That may have changed, though. (I'm not really into SEO.)

We're in the process of switch the s9y project's sites to https, including the blog, so yes, it is possible. I know that Bernd switched his blog to https 3 years ago, so it was possible in versions < 2.0 already. Maybe Bernd or other people using s9y with https can add to this, I have yet to do that myself. (I'll try to ping him on Twitter.)

HTTPS on S9Y-Blogs works fine. You have to follow these steps:
  • Implement SSL-Certificates to your site. The doing of this implementation depends from your hosting provider.
  • Insert a redirection in your .htaccess to redirect all http-calls to https-calls.
  • Change the URL of your blog in your S9Y configuration from http://my.blog.xyz to https://my.blog.xyz.
This should do it. The modern themes and the plugins usually are aware to use the prefix from the configuration. There could be plugins which use external services that may implemet them with http instead of https. This will lead to a broken security chain. For the most cases, an entry on this board will activate a developer to fix it (if it is possible for the external service). :)

You have to take care for things you embed via the http-nugget-plugin or other things you modify individually in your blogs sources. If you embed external elements to your blog entries you also have to take care that they use a secure connection.

I'm conflicted on AMP. On the one hand, I like the core idea – a subset of HTML, static, that can then be easily cached. On the other, AMP has not much to do with that claimed core idea. It replaces HTML tags with AMP-Tags, makes the page rely on Javascript (for static content!), and that Javascript has to be hosted by google.

So, I don't like it. But we should have it as an option for s9y, maybe as a plugin. It would be easy enough to implement – it's just another template for an article under another URL. Someone up for trying?

Hello,

@yellowled: Thanks for the straight talk about AMP. We'll see whether a developer will tackle it some day or not. I can't even guess how much labor (man hours) is required to get this done. Good to know that https is possible right now.

@onli: Programming the rules for tag substitution, conflicts with other plugins and templates might be the hardest part. But I don't really know.

@MarioH: Thanks for the step by step instructions for https. That sounds indeed doable.:-)

Just to clarify, I'm not “against AMP” or something. I just think it has not (yet, maybe) become what it's intended to be, and I'm not sure if it is really useful for (small) blogs.

As it is so often with all things Google, we don't really know.
