I am a big fan of Serendipity. http://sheck.com/serendipity/

I also own a hosting company. I have been around for 7 years in the hosting business. As I understand it, the developers of Serendipity are running a hosting servive for the software? Am I correct? How will this affect my ability to offer an ad free version of serendipity blog software to my customers.?

You are free to use Serendipity for anything you want including offering free or paid hosting. We will even list you on http://www.s9y.org/61.html, once your service is available (and you notify us about that).
