I'm running a modified version of my Kosh theme with a few plugins that I've hacked a bit to do a bit more or do it differently than they did originally.
Plugins:
serendipity_event_startcat
Gives the admin the ability to show just one category on the front page.
serendipity_plugin_recententries
Now it displays all recent entries except entries from the category selected with serendipity_event_startcat
