Welt Hertha Linke - Custum Style

I just moved from Wordpress to s9y and made my first custom theme basing on carl's serendipity ver. 3.0. It's inspired by Wordpress' K2
I got one known problem: There should be a distance between the header and the topt of the page, like it is in the K2 theme. FF displayes it right, Opera displays to much an IE doesn't display any distance....
I'm just a beginner in css, so you may give me a hint.
