Temporary Spartacus-Update outage

Post by garvinhicking »

Yesterday, my private linux development box passed away. My small EPIA ME-6000 Mini-ITX PC served me and the serendipity development several gracious coding hours. Even though its 256MB of RAM and the performance of a P2-400 was sometimes driving me insane, it had one big bonus: It was nearly fanless, and thus silent enough to fit into my combined living/work area.

And now it is no more.

Which temporarily means, as long as I get a new silent PC I cannot boot my linux system, which (apart from fetching my mail and beign my file storage) also took care of updating the Spartacus XML files every 24 hours. This means that until then, the new plugin versions are not available via Spartacus, and you must either wait or fetch them via CVS

Since a new silent PC cuts a larger hole into the budget that I had planned for my turkey-holidays, I can't tell how long I need to gather up that new PC. If anyone here has a small project (2-3 weekends?) in his backhand, that would require a skilled PHP-developer with solid Serendipity-knowledge like myself - please raise your voice. :-)

Garvin, I would give you a VPN connection and account on my Linux box (allowing you to use Linux from any computer), but it might not work so well across the Atlantic.

What's it going to take to get you that new box? I'm willing to contribute.

Hi Jude!

Thanks a lot for that kind offer - also to anybody else who offered something similar.

The problem with something like that is just plain security: I would need to use/put my SSH keys and FTP passwords onto that machine, and because I'm a tad paranoid, I would not like to put them onto anyones computer. I mean, I ultimately trust you judebert, but for me it's more a matter of principle. Hope you're not offended by that. :-)

I just ordered a new server (see http://www.sizo.biz/irw_page.534e5f7369 ... e656e.html if you want to see some german). A completely fanless PC with a Pentium-M processor. It's gonna cost a lot (around 1300$), but the other alternatives to me were less appealing.

Judebert, don't feel to contribute to that, please. You are contributing with your enourmus help in Serendipity, and I would feel bad also accepting money from you :-D

(I first wanted to write this personally to Judebert. But then I felt that I wan to act transparently in this regard, which is why I'm posting public)

Best regards,
Garvin

Great, that you bought a new machine.

I think i'm not the kind of guy you decline money from :( ;)

So i'll pay 25 Euros for the system to your PP account. I don't write this here to get a thank you ;) Some other people should follow now. The software and especially the support is worth some coins.

Hi Garvin. Sorry to hear of your dilemma. I'd like to offer a small bit of help. Hopefully many others will do likewise. Didn't know about your loss until visiting the forum after getting the script up and running on the day your server died. Helping toward your new machine is the very least we can do. Thanks so much for sharing your excellent Serendipity script and, most importantly, the sincereness you display in giving even further of your time, thoughts and effort in support.
I looked up just in time to trip and fall, but on the way down I caught myself. I guess it all makes sense.
