is there a way to possibly insert a favicon for each skin or just one standard favicon

Yes, you can edit your index.tpl file and put the favicon meta html code there, or use the "HTML HEad Nugget" plugin to insert it. Or simple put a "favicon.ico" into your web root.

If you're interested in a different favicon for each theme, your best bet would be to edit the index.tpl in each theme. For themes with no index.tpl, copy the one from default/.
