Professional Design

Post by danst0 »

Hi,

I would like to do some changes in my s9y theme, from the HTML side I would be able to pull it of, but I am missing the visual design skills. So basically I know that I want to change the design, but I don't know how it should look like.

What options are there to get some external help? I wouldn't mind paying a bit, even though it's only a hobby.

Daniel

Well, this is like everything starts..., isn't it?
You know you want a change, but you haven't got a vision yet.
This will rumor inside for a while, slowly you get an eye for it, and you will find designs, which point into the right direction.
Even if you get some help in this very beginning, you will have to know what you want first, otherwise no one can start designing or will design only her/his visions. Try to gather some keywords of what is your theme, your vision, your personallity, your ident, etc.

Basically Serendipity is sort of designless, since you can do nearly everything with plain html and css.

Ian

Ian, calling something sort of designless because it uses html and css is really inaccurate ;)

Daniel, I know of two designers in the community: Yellowled and Don Chambers. Don't know how much they have to do, but you could try to contact them if you want to offer a job.

That's exactly my problem, so I think I want it more whitish, but still retaining rests of the current color scheme, maybe also some rounded corners.
Is this already enough for a designer?

How about hiring a designer for a mockup only and programming it by myself? Anyone experience with that?

Hi Daniel,

what means "whitish"?

Since last autumn I have "Kinetic" from Don Chambers and I am very satisfied. It is very flexible. Although I like to experiment, I have not tried all possibilities. You can try out by yourself some things, e.g. the picture in the blog head, the colour (8 different and for extra 20 USD some more).

We had some conversations about special changes (before and after the update to version 1.2), he called me his guinea pig, because I gave him quickly feedback. It means he is willing to improove it and help the users to get attractive designs which he could show other customers as reference (I guess).

- Now I have a wish for a smal change and I told it him in his forum, to make it once more flexible, when using placeholders for ads (make design differences between static pages and dynamic pages). But this is so special, that I should offer him to pay some more to encourage him to make it, I think.

And the round corners should not be the problem as well then. It sounds interesting for me as well.

There are plattforms, where you can explain your vague wishes to a community of designers and ask them, how much they want for some drafts. - You can use the clouds. you will get many ideas in short time.

There are several free css sites like http://www.freecsstemplates.org/css-templates/ which may give you some ideas.

You can adapt these to suit s9y reasonably easily.
