Only download template?

Is it possible to download templates in the template admin section without using them immediately as blog template?
The background of my question: At the moment I am working on the mobile template switcher plugin (mobile output). It needs some extra templates and the best way to get them would be to load them there.
Extra question: Is it possible to initiate the template download from inside the plugin anyhow?
