Does any one know of a serendipity plugin that does automatic color coding of XML or actionscript code. also that allows me to directly enter my code without worrying about indentation and escaping characters.

Have you tried the GeSHI markup plugin? It has the most extensive syntax highlighting for many formats I know ow.
