References / Footnotes

Post by SoWhy »

Hi there,

would it be possible to create a plugin that allows easy addition of references / footnotes, kind of like Wikipedia does?

On Wikipedia, you can add text in <ref>-Tags and it will be displayed in the article where the <references /> Tag is found. On s9y I think we could do without the latter tag, simply displaying them below the entry in a slightly smaller font and maybe separated with a <hr />. The plugin would number them according to their place in the article and then add anchors to the text so you can click the number and it will take you to the footnote.
For those of your unfamiliar with Wikipedia (I know such people exist!), please see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Footnotes and http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Cite/Cite.php.

I am no plugin-author but I think it might be pretty simple to realize (I might be wrong though). Unfortunately, I cannot do it, so I wanted to ask, whether someone here would be willing to give it a try.

Hi!

Maybe check out the "Textile" markup plugin, this one has a simple footnote parser

(Textile is available also as a s9y plugin, never mind references to other blog systems)

Thanks garvin, I'll check it out. It looks more complicated though, so I hope someone considers porting Wikipedia's functionality some day. The good thing about the MediaWiki-style footnotes is that you can place them in the text, thus having the footnote always with the text it references when editing. :)
