Using categories as subdomains!

Post by Trograin »

Hi everyone!

Wanted to share my choise of fixing a small thing that in my eyes was a problem.

I recently putted up http://environmental-idea.org (Swedish) for my university group of environmental students. I had to putup multiple categories that could be showned seperatly like subdomains. No problemo. Each and every category got its own theme(Leaf that I multiplyed into 6 exact versions (leaf1, leaf2, leaf3 ....)) Then I created links in the main top bar to each and every one of them.

My problem then became that whenever I wrote the main url I got to the blog where all the entries in all the categories where showned, not a good thing.

I have tryed a bunch of different approaches untill I gave up and simply used URL forward teknik :D

Simple putted that the main url would be showned towards the url where the Category I wanted to be comign up first. Now whenever someone is writing environmental-idea.org they jump straight to my category of choise as number 1.

Though I wish I could do it in a simpler way, for example in the category plugin possibility to choose what category I want to be main one so that the default one dosent jump up and give all entries in one single blog or category if you like.

Extended properties for entries

That plugin lets you hide your entry from article overview / frontpage.

I will ahve atleast 10 to 20 Authors writing in this blog and belive me when i say this, No way they will remember to click in this feature whenever they are writing an entry for a specific category :D

I would lvoe to be able to config in the admin area the frontpage to work the same way as subdomains (Categorys with there own templates).

I hope someone from the developer team sees this and says if its possible or not for the future :D

There is a front category plugin, that shows only entries from one specific category on the frontpage, that might be helpful!

Okkkey, cant find any plugin that will do what I need, no frontend category plugin either :(

I allready have the plugins that let me asing templates to different categories, in that way the entries will be showned only on that category, EXCEPT the Default overview / frontpage where they will still all be showned if you dont choose specificlly that you dont want your entries to be showned on the frontpage. :(

http://www.environmental-idea.org (Fixed up with URL forwarding on my DNS provider), url that its beeing forwarded to is:
http://environmental-idea.org/index.php ... /6-Nyheter

I amusing that one now as my frontpage...its a workaround I simply dont like

http://environmental-idea.org (Cant be fixed up with URL forwarding couse then the domain name itself will disapear...and helllooo that is not good :D)

So as long as peopel write with www. infront there is no problems, but if they dont......then they come to the frontpage and still se all the entries from all categories :(

hmm I dont know why this plugin is nowhere to be found, because I USE this in one of my blog installations!

create a new folder within the plugin folder called serendipity_event_startcat, then put this file in it: http://www.marc-gaertner.de/file.txt and rename the file to serendipity_event_startcat.php

I hope this will work. I gotta ask Garvin why this plugin isnt in the repository anymore.

I still can't find it. This is almost exactly what I'm looking for, too. S9y 0.9-beta2, SPARTACUS 2.4.

I set sourceforge.net to be my file mirror in SPARTACUS, but neither of the XML metadata mirrors currently includes the plugin in its list. I guess I'll have to install it manually.

Thanks.
