I like that, but would propose to phrase it "The requested page
could not be found (404). ...". Don't frighten not-so-tech-savvy people with strange acronyms.
I see your point. Then again, they could just as easily be confused by entries vs (static) pages …
(But yes, page is probably better.)

This is more of a comment for theme developers....
In the Timeline theme, $view=='404' gives the visitor a search box, a back button and a homepage button. I think those three things might be most valuable to visitors who trigger a 404.
An example of this can be seen at this non-existent url
on the timeline demo.

I like the solution in Timeline
As written above I use the plugin static page with the checkbox "Diese Seite als 404-Fehler-Seite definieren".
Now I recogniced something strange. When I have a wrong URL like this:
it works as I expected: my static page is shown.
With "html" at the end it doesn't use the static page solution ...
... the index page is shown with the message "Die angeforderte Seite konnte nicht gefunden werden (404). Dies ist die Standardseite."
Looks for me as something in the static page plugin is wrong? I use s9y vers. 2.1.1
