Getting event_forum to work

Post by terrym »

Hi all

I have downloaded and installed serendipity_event_forum into the plugins folder of my website (terrymold.co.uk). I then logged into my blog as admin and installed to plugin. Then I selected Configure Plugins and filled in as much as I thought it needed, and saved it. Everything appeared to go with no error messages.

I then went back into my blog as a visitor, expecting to see a shiny new link to my shiny new Forum. But there was nothing new at all. So I've either done something wrong during the install/setup, or I need to complete something else.

I would imagine that there are members out there who have installed plugins 'till the cows come home. So I am wondering if someone could either point me to a Tutorial about installing plugins, or just answer this post with a fairly thorough set of instructions to enable me to get my forum up and running.

Thanks in advance
Terry

Hi!

The problem with the currently unmaintained forum plugin is that it does not "advertise" itself as a link on the frontend on its own. You would need to place a link manually either in your template, or by using a HTML nugget plugin, or by some other means. You would call it by opening http://yourblog/index.php?serendipity[subpage]=forum.

Thanks Garvin for your reply.

You mentioned that the event forum isn't currently maintained. Does that mean it isn't very good? Is it used by many Serendipity users?

Thanks

Hi Terry!

Well, to be honest - the forum plugin works, but it's really very simple. So "very good" depends on what you may want to get out of it. Serendipity is really aimed at blogging and we figure we are doing a good job with that - if you want the same amount of quality, thoughts and work on a forum software, you might be better off with vbulletin, phpbb or the likes. I'd suggest to simply have a look at the forum plugin and see if it suits your need.
