Translation with Transifex?

Post by LazyBadger »

Last day I saw at least 2 projects with plaintext-based (not gettext, as others) localization-files, which move translation tasks to Transifex (ICMS and XOOPS).

May I suggest at least to consider the same direction? Texts inside Git-repos aren't impossible trick, but Transifex's frontend make translations easier and more manageable tasks

Hi!

Hm, I don't like depending on a service that currently is free, but is targeted at generating money with their service (if I read the page correctly)...I'd like to keep it dependency free - the hassle for upgrading the translation system for an unstable future is IMHO a problem.

What do others think about this? I'm no expert on localization...

They offer a currently free plan ("Limited time offer"), which usually costs $19 (per month, I assume judging by the other plan available). That's about all we need to read, right?

Yeah, but what when the service goes out of business? Then we'd have no access to software managing our translations anymore, and were vendor-locked so to speak.

With github, it's all git-based, so we can at any time move our repository to any other place we like. I'd really like to keep the maintenance of our software so that we don't have to rely on anybody's free offering.

And what's not to stop a company from changing the "currently free" plans to "well, now you sadly need to pay something" plans?

Or am I misunderstanding, and transifex is a piece of software we can have total control of when applying as an open source project? I.e. transifex being open source installable software? I don't exactly get it (though I didn'T apply for their service [yet]).

Garvin

I vote for staying independent!
We have that tool of Vlada Ajgl, which might help in translation question, don't we? I never had a look at it, but maybe this is worth improving...

You have full-time access to source and translated lang-files (unmodified in any way from original form, as I can see, only filename changed for DLed from frontend files)
With github, it's all git-based, so we can at any time move our repository to any other place we like. I'd really like to keep the maintenance of our software so that we don't have to rely on anybody's free offering.
Transifex Community Edition is downloadable and installable free solution

And, BTW, Git can't help totally in translation/translator's specific task: find untranslated parts, support TranslationMemory, even in sync language-files after changing source language (I had to do it for Russian by eyes and hands)

Erm, just to make this very clear:

I am not voting to use the service.

Their payment model seems more than flaky. I'm not even sure there is going to be a plan free of charge after said limited time offer. Definitely not an option for an open source project.
