Entries being bombarded by unwanted comments

Post by kingofsicily »

Hi there,

Does anyone have experience with entries being bombarded by comments? No doubt it is some sort of program sending nonsense to those entries on my website for which I allow comments (at least, I can't imagine people actually typing all these messages just to annoy me (although the writer(s) of the program no doubt choses to annoy people)).

This is the kind of reactions I get:
- This info is the cat's pajamas!
- One or two to reembmer, that is.
- hlSijt iaxhkxpahpbu

Fortunately nothing abusive.

The senders:
Gebruiker Naam: Chartric
Gebruiker E-mail: q.qouklouf@nic.info
Gebruiker Homepage: [http://www.]yahoo.com

Gebruiker Naam: Gildas
Gebruiker E-mail: tvermilya@neo.rr.com
Gebruiker Homepage: [http://www.]bing.com

Gebruiker Naam: tsmvvdygnw
Gebruiker E-mail: ptvtbc@dtjvcw.com
Gebruiker Homepage: [http://www.]riprlvqqeuqu.com

*I placed the [] myself here, since I don't seem to be able to place more than 4 URLs.

The entries have been published months ago. Suddenly this weekend I received some 30 odd of these comments.

Does anyone know what this is and what I can do to stop it?

Cheers,

Rogier.

It is comment/trackback spam. Install the spamblock plugin, add the spamblock bayes plugin and configure them properly. Delete spam comments.

Thanks,

I'll look into it. I already had installed Spam Protector plugin (is that what you mean by the 'spamblock plugin'?), but now I've added Spamblock (Bayes). Let's see what happens.

Also add an akismet API key to the spamblock plugin... you can get one free from either wordpress or typepad.

I have been wondering for a long time: What advantage does a spammer have from having comments linking to yahoo, google and facebook from my blog?

Greetings

None, unless they own said domains, which is unlikely. Might be someone testing a spam bot, might be someone speculating these URLs will be reported to spam databases like Akismet etc. by a lot of blogs … I have given up trying to understand why spammers do what they do. :)

Good Idea. I wouldn't have wondered if I didn't get that kind of blog spam literally by the hundred.

They are testing your site's spam protection. When they notice a spam comment stays up they bring in the big guns and start spamming you for real. They've gotten real clever now and it's no longer a case of straightforward spamming.
