Registration only for comments

Post by robert »

Is there a way, that a visitor can only register to give comments. Some Blogs are little communities and I would know if the nick "mrbob" is the same as 30 comments before.
cookies are sometime a good idea to remember a visitor. but it´s not useable when I use two ore more computers or sitting in a netcafe.

Actually, no. There currently is no plugin to only allow registered users to post comments.

However the spamblock plugin could easily be adapted for this, or even a new plugin could be introduced for this, it wouldn't be too hard to do this.

But I for myself to not like blogs where I have to register for commenting. Thus I am sorry that I cannot offer you free help to code thos plugin, as I do not like the intention personally. :-)

Best regards,
Garvin

No, I didn´t mean that visitors have to register for comments - I agree that everybody should have the possibility to give comments.

It should be only a free choice to register. So you can log in from everywhere and post a comment with you nickname. It is only a method to "protect" your nickname to be used by someone else. If you not log in you can also post comments, but not with your nickname (it´s protected to use from other people) unless you sit on your computer with the right cookie.

Sound this better

Okay, that actually sounds a lot better.

However, this sounds much more easier than it actually is, because Serendipity only knows authors/editors and no simple "users". This is because usually a blog does not have logged in visitors.

Thus the plugin would need to create its own usertable. This is no big problem, but then you also have to create a new login form for people to register, and you have to display the login form somewhere, and you have to connect the bits and pieces everywhere.

And because in using blogs for 2 years and never having had nickname collisions anywhere (also not on my forums for 5 years) I think this is no pressing problem. Of course it would be nice, I do support that option...my bottom line is that just I think I sadly am not going to be the one who will implement this plugin.

It's a nice work though for someone who wants to get his hands dirty in Serendipity. I will give advice gladly. :-)

I know that there is much job programming this good piece of software.

The problem of keeping my own nickname is more dramatic when you have a blog (which I actually don´t) with controversial topics. There would be sometimes good, that nobody else can give a comment in my name.

"Having" users could also be an interesting thing in other ways: to give them access to some special sites,...

But I understand that this is not in the slot. No problem, it was only a suggestion and no urgent need.

Wish you an nice evening

But I think on a blog with controversional topics, you as the author would keep track of the comments, and you can see yourself if someone comments with your stolen username, and you could delete/edit the comment then?

However I do agree with you it is a thing for the future where development could be used on!
