You were right - it was an ISP error. They said: It looks like the script was hitting one of the mod_sec security rules, we do occasionally get a few false positives. I have whitelisted this rule so if you could retest and let us know if you have any further issues And it's working correctly now.

Easiest method by now: Set autodetect host name to yes, install the dashboard plugin, then the Serendipity Autoupdate plugin, point yourself to backend start...

I don't think the first link is relevant. It was actually while trying to do what it says in the second link that I found the error.

if I go to Configuration I cannot save any changes. Pressin Check and Save gives a screen
