Is it possible to have an s9y theme with one of those sliding Ajax shelves?

I am not sure about your other questions, but a plugin is available where you can easily embed Gallery into an s9y installation.

When you click on event plugins, there should be an option to install Spartacus. After Spartacus is installed - if you have errors downloading plugins, go back to your Spartacus configuration screen and make sure File/Mirror location (XML metadata) and File/Mirror location (files) are set to netmirr...

Can you explain what type of errors you are getting?

Go to your Spartacus configuration screen and change the File/Mirror location for both XML and files to Netmirror.org.

It should work after that.
