Hmm...it might not be random, but for now you could use the Remote RSS sidebar plugin to pull the latest pics from your albums.

You can do this in your admin screen under Configuration -> Appearance and Options. Find the URL Rewriting option and set it to Disable URL Rewriting.

Hmm..show up as in links in a menu? You can add that by installing an HTML nugget sidebar plugin. Just type in the HTML for the URL links.

Why not just set up a category for a "mini blog" type sidebar item? Is this what you are trying to do?
