I want to upgrade my installation but where can I disable serendipity while updating? because uploading will take some time, won't there be error's meanwhile if someone tries to open the blog and some files are updated and others aren't?

Is there some option or plugin that I could select a few posted as featured or someting and they would show up in every page, a little like top posts but the selected ones by me. Like the top header of http://kotaku.com/.

Multiple categories are allowed in the default configuration. Perhaps you're speaking of the "category templates" plugin?
