The upgrade is still failing now we've moved servers. I've asked our hosting company so will see if they can suggest anything.

They want to move us to a new server shortly so I'll try again once the move is complete and go from there.

Upgrading to 5.3 didn't make any difference, it's still giving the error when trying to access the admin area.

Not sure what to try next.

I'm just recovering back to the old version so I'll confirm the version I'm upgrading from. I wonder about maybe going 1.6 than 1.7 ?

I'm not sure what's going on. I set up the auto update and it seemed to go well, as before, but the result is the same.

I did get a screen talking about specific things it needed to do as I'm upgrading from 1.5(?) to 1.7 but no errors returned that I could see.

I don't think its a question of version. Serendipity 1.7 is running fine everywhere. Ask your ISP about Server changes that might have caused this issue and see my notes about the logs. The serendipity_config_local.inc.php is closed of OK. It's the other file noted in the error that's not, but then neither are some of the others in the include directory.

I'll have a look at the links. I'm not that technical so I may been to restore back to the old version.
